[GTech]: Mobile Technology Now Taught at GTech.

  • May 9, 2012 11:06 am

By Arpine Sargsyan

Gyumri Information Technology Center’s MLab, a program supported by Enterprise Incubator Foundation (EIF), began its mobile technology training courses this spring. The aim of the trainings is to develop mobile programming skills in the Shirak region.

During a two-month pilot course, which was held during GTech’s winter break, students were taught program design by experts from Yerevan-based programming companies specializing in iOS/iPhone, Blackberry, and Android application program development. Forty students who are mostly from Gyumri and the surrounding Shirak communities are currently involved in the program.

Through the work of the students, two mobile applications have been developed and with the support of EIF, both have been made available for download in the Apple App Store. GTech is in the process of organizing a “training of trainers” where Blackberry programming experts from abroad will teach mobile technology skills in an effort to create more local specialists.

Similar to GTech’s Web Technologies Department, the new Mobile Technologies curriculum requires students to complete two years of coursework, which includes lessons in C++ and Java programming, as well as project management and various other related specialized subjects.

“The final goal of the new Mobile Technologies Department is to create a business team that can work on the many mobile-focused development projects that we have been receiving from abroad,” says GTech Director Amalya Yeghoyan.

Amalya also mentioned that students are signing contracts, which require them to work in Gyumri after graduation even though the present employment situation is bleak. With the formation of the Gyumri Technopark, however, she hopes that all of the graduates will be able to stay in Gyumri and help build the local economy.

[GTech]: GTech Develops a New Curriculum on Mobile Platforms.

  • January 10, 2012 10:27 am

By Arpine Sargsyan

Through a new collaboration with Enterprise Incubator Foundation (EIF), Gyumri Information Technology Center (GTech) has opened the “M-Lab.”.  This lab will provide mobile platform development courses for GTech students and Gyumri’s IT professionals.

With a curriculum that focuses on mobile platforms and technologies like Android, iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile, we hope the given courses will allow for the eventual creation of a mobile development faculty within GTech.

Courses include trainings in programs like HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and introduction to mobile web design. They will promote the use of these techniques among specialists and students, thus promoting mobile application development in Gyumri.

In order to gauge interest in the new program, a trial training in mobile web development was delivered by experienced GTech programmer and trainer Shahen Gasparyan at the end of December. Additional trainings will start this week and will continue until March 8.

Trainings in mobile web design will be held at GTech until early March.

[GTech]: GTech Garners Interest at the Annual Shirak Business Expo.

By Arpine Sargsyan

The annual Shirak Expo 2011 kicked off on November 24 at the Hoktember Cinema in Gyumri. The expo, which is organized by the Shirak Competitiveness Center, this year was incorporated as part of “Support to Armenia-Turkey Rapprochement,” a USAID project implemented by the Consortium of the Eurasia Partnership Foundation, Yerevan Press Club, International Center for Human Development and the Union of Manufacturers and Businessmen (Employers) of Armenia. With a goal of bringing together businesses, service centers and production companies from different regions, the expo is an opportunity for all to promote their work and make new contacts.

The expo was a unique opportunity for GTech to find new customers, partners, and also to promote Armenian and Turkish business cooperation. The event brought together approximately 50 Armenian and 27 Turkish companies to exhibit a variety of products and services including food products, textiles, IT and construction materials. GTech representatives presented on the Center’s activities and its Business Development Unit (BDU),  which works not only with local customers and companies, but also with Turkish businesses.
