[FAR Sponsorships]: Haratunians Bring Christmas Joy to School in Armenia.

Every year, thanks to the generosity of Michael and Marie Haratunian, a beautiful Christmas celebration is organized by the Fund for Armenian Relief for the children of the Nubarashen #11 Special School in Yerevan.

“When we visited the school a few years ago, Marie and I decided to help these very special kids in any way we can,” said Michael Haratunian, a long-time FAR director, and one of the distinguished leaders of the American-Armenian community.

“It is a place for handicapped children whose parents can no longer take care of them. The facility, like most of them, needs much improvement. It is located on the outskirts of Yerevan next to a dirty landfill where all of the city’s garbage is dumped. We helped in small ways with improvements to the heating system, kitchen equipment, and recreation rooms. Our help is small and insignificant compared to the life these children and their families have to endure.”

The celebration held at the school this week was organized in the true spirit of Christmas. The children’s hearts were filled with joy and gratitude for their benefactors’ kindness, love, and compassion. They all performed in a singing and dancing show, after which a Christmas dinner was held. Parents traveled from different regions of Armenia to witness the joy and happiness of their kids.

[FAR Sponsorships]: FAR Expands its Support to the Remote Border Region of Shamshadin.

  • October 14, 2011 1:24 pm

By Margarit Piliposyan

In order to expand the coverage of its activities to the places most in need in Armenia, FAR has decided to stretch its helping hand toward one of the most remote and vulnerable regions of Armenia – the Shamshadin region of Tavush marz.

Situated in the northeastern part of Armenia, Tavush marz includes Ijevan, Tavush, Noyemberyan and Shamshadin. The region borders Gegharkunik and Kotayk marzes to the south; Lori marz and Georgia to the north; and Azerbaijan to the east. Berd, its major town, is located about 200 kilometers from Yerevan, and has a population of roughly 9,000 people. The town used to be a center for diamond cutting, woodworking and food production industries. Today, sadly, almost no industry exists there.

FAR’s work in Shamshadin first began two years ago with support from American donor John Thomas who generously provided gifts to more than 50 youth from single-parent families. Since the start of 2011, the following programs have been introduced:

  1. Children of Armenia Sponsorship Program (CASP) now provides financial assistance twice a year to 50 orphaned children and those without fathers. They receive $180 each year. The amount is a significant addition to their modest family budgets as the majority survive on pensions and public assistance
  2. The same beneficiary group periodically receives supplies like school stationery, clothing, footwear and hygiene packages from FAR. The suppliers of humanitarian aid are organizations like the United Armenian Fund, UMCOR, etc.
  3. Thanks to Megerian Carpets, in 2011 the only art and music school in Berd received a bulk of carpet weaving yarn. UMCOR also donated some stationary to the school.
  4. Support to Aigepar Kindergarten includes three nutritious and balanced meals for 20 kindergarten children, thanks to CASP and the Women’s Guild Central Council of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern).
  5. Two students from Berd pursue higher education at the State University of Economics. FAR’s Mathevosian Scholarship Program pay their tuition fees. One student of the Yerevan State Teachers’ Training University has just received the Daughter of Vartan – Anahid Chapter Scholarship, which will enable her to obtain a bachelor’s degree and return to Berd to teach at a high school.

[FAR Sponsorships]: Dedicated Benefactors Visit Gyumri.

A velvety September day in Gyumri became even brighter when a group of some of FAR’s most steadfast supporters arrived at Vardanants Square. The Khanjian and the Sarkissian families, who are dedicated to the improvement of Gyumri, arrived to visit and observe the programs they set up. It was a good day for our city, as Gyumri looked so rejuvenated and strong.

Back in 2003, Patrick Sarkissian and Sebastien Khanjian started the Gyumri Information Technology Center (GTECH) , which has helped to transform the city’s information technology industry into a booming sector. In addition, Sebastien’s family started the Khanjian Sponsorship Program. Similar to the Children of Armenia Sponsorship Program (CASP), the Khanjian Program has supported seven orphans by providing them with a stipend twice a year until the children turn 18 years old.

This distribution differed immensely from the previous, as the kids were privileged to receive their stipends personally from their benefactors who were, in turn, even happier to see the bright faces of the children and their mothers. The warm atmosphere of the event felt more like a family gathering. Grateful parents expressed their genuine appreciation to the Khanjians not only for their regular financial support and generous gifts they received on the top of the stipend, but also for the immense warmth of Sebastien, his brother John and his parents Berge and Tuula. It was really an unforgettable day for both parties. They agreed to stay in immediate touch and become true friends.

The day was crowned by a visit of the two families to the Mother Armenia statue in Gyumri’s center, which was renovated by FAR in 2000. The statue symbolizes peace through strength. It was sculpted by Patrick Sarkissyan’s uncle Ara Sarkisyan.

[FAR Scholarships]: Avedis & Arsho Baghsarian Scholar Profile – Roza Markosyan.

By Veronika Mkrtchyan

This year, the very first recipients of FAR’s Avedis & Arsho Baghsarian Scholarship will receive their bachelor’s degrees. In 2007, when the program was newly established, the benefactors took the initiative to provide financial support to two students studying at Yerevan State University and Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts.

Today, beneficiary Roza Markosyan who recently graduated from Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts’ Design Department recalls with deep happiness the day when she found out she received her scholarship. “My father didn’t even believe that such a thing was possible,” she said. Roza graduated from Jdanovka Secondary School in Javakhk before moving to Yerevan to continue her education. “My family is large and our only income comes from the agricultural products we produce. So FAR’s support became the path toward the fulfillment of my dreams.”

As a result of receiving a university education, Roza has gained professional skills in the methods of fashion design. In her final project she synthesized ancient Roman style with modern. The three dresses designed by her are notable for their tender colors and unique approach. Professors are very pleased with Roza’s work and also with her academic progress in general.

In the future, Roza aims to continue her education and earn a master’s degree and also work at the same time. Soon we hope that Roza will be able to delight all of us with an exhibition of her designs. We wish her the best with all of her plans and goals.

[FAR Sponsorships]: FAR Distributes TVs Donated by the Marriott Hotel to Orphanages, Schools and Senior Homes.

Last month, FAR received a very generous donation of 245 TV sets from Armenia’s Marriott Hotel. Now, the organization is distributing the TVs to 55 organizations, including orphanages, special schools, secondary schools, senior centers, old age homes, soup kitchens, etc., in Yerevan and other regions.

During our visit to Gavar Orphanage, we asked one little girl named Melikyan Kristine if she watched TV very often.
“If I have a chance,” she said. “I often watch soap operas on TV, but the boys are soccer fans. The new TVs will give us an opportunity to watch our favorite programs without quarrelling.”

The boys were in a flurry during our visit to Vanadzor Orphanage.
At that time, the European Weightlifting Championships were on and the boys were hurrying to install the new TVs in the lounge room. One of them happily said that finally everyone could watch whatever they prefer.

[FAR Sponsorships]: Megerian Rugs Company Supports Gavar Orphanage.

There are several different groups at Gavar Orphanage that aim to develop children’s skills. One such group is the carpet-weaving club, which has been running since 1995. Many children spend their free time at the weaving looms where they get acquainted with the traditions of Armenian embroidery, carpet making, and ultimately general Armenian culture.

The goal of our visit to Gavar Orphanage was not only to meet with Gulamerian Scholarship Program  beneficiaries who reside at Gavar, but to also deliver weaving materials donated by the Megerian Rugs Company to the children. This is a usual donation provided by this company  in response to requests to help the children in the class who desperately need yarn.

During our visit, I met 17-year-old Aida Asirbabyan who has worked on carpet making since she was 10. “At first, I was seduced by the beautiful color of the threads,” Aida said. “Later, I realized that carpet weaving is both painting and design, both art and tradition, and finally, a piece of our culture that differentiates the Armenian people from many other nationalities. You can always find me here after my lessons. It is a restful and a magical world for me.”

The orphans were extremely happy and they presented us with a thank you letter and a small handmade carpet for the company.

[FAR Sponsorships]: FAR Distributes Gifts to the Children of Kharberd Orphanage.

I have visited the Nor Kharberd Orphanage in Ararat Marz several times. Recently, FAR Communications Officer Hasmik Manukyan accompanied me on my visit to the orphanage to distribute jackets and boots to the children. From the outset this trip seemed like it would be an ordinary one. Yet, the very moment we met the disabled children of Nor Kharberd, we were filled with excitement. Witnessing the children’s happiness upon receiving the gifts and hearing their words of gratitude filled us with joy.

Today, more than 260 mentally and physically disabled children between the ages of 6 and 24 live at Nor Kharberd. And while the Armenian government in recent years has taken some serious steps to improve the conditions of those children, many needs have yet to be addressed.

Orphanage Director Harutyun Balasanyan proudly showed us some of the recent improvements, like a new sub building constructed by the government and a few rooms that have been renovated due to the contributions of various supporters. But he also urgently stressed the outstanding needs, which are almost impossible to address due to the country’s financial crisis. While there are handicapped ramps on the grounds, there are too few to actually allow the children to freely move around the campus in their wheelchairs. As a result, it’s very difficult to travel between the facility’s buildings. The living room also desperately needs renovation. It serves as a waiting room for visitors who often must pass the entire day there.

Harutyun also hopes to build a rehabilitation center. “As a physician, I deeply realize what a crucial role something like a water therapy or a rehabilitation center would play in the improvement of the children’s health. If we ever succeed in fulfilling this dream, I would consider myself the happiest man in the world,” Harutyun said.

Upon our departure, we expressed words of acknowledgement to the entire staff. They all deserve the highest appreciation for their devotion to such important work. We hope that people will continue to try and improve the lives of these children who deserve happiness and love. I hope that society will never be indifferent to their fate.
