[Fine Art Painter’s Program]: Yerevan Artists Find Inspiration along the Kasakh River.

Although Armenia has four seasons, its longest and most remarkable is autumn when forests are filled with the colors that are so bright, their hues so diverse that they seem to envelop the world.

Through FAR’s Fine Art Painter’s Program,* eight artists were able to participate in a day trip to the Kasakh River in the Aragatsotn Province.  They included FAR Gulamerian Program beneficiary Aleksander Nefedov, who is currently working on completing his master’s degree at Yerevan Fine Art Academy.

“When I was offered the opportunity to participate in a visit to that beautiful corner of nature, I immediately agreed. Nowadays it’s not easy to go outside of the city to work. Also, I have always dreamed of being able to paint with my senior colleagues and learn from their suggestions,” said Aleksander. At the end of the day, the artists praised Aleksander’s style and also made professional suggestions.

Aleksander managed to paint two compositions on canvases provided by FAR. He generously presented one of the paintings as a gift to FAR’s Yerevan office.

*For 10 years, FAR has worked with the Artists Union of Armenia to organize daylong excursions for artists to different parts of Armenia. The program covers transportation costs and provides food and supplies for the day trips, which are a welcome respite from Yerevan and a chance for these artists to immerse themselves in and be inspired by nature. FAR usually holds these trips three times a year and each time one artist thanks FAR with the gift of a painting.

[FAR Fine Art Painter's Program]: When Beauty and Purpose Meet.

I always have a similar feeling when I join the group of painters who are part of FAR’s Fine Art Painter’s Program.* Together we set off to visit one of Armenia’s picturesque places for a day. On one hand, I am excited to spend time with my mother Armenia. I’m also thrilled by the prospect of discussing with Armenian artists the art world and thinking about its future developments.

This time we were headed to Amberd, an 11th century fortress complex built on the slopes of Mt. Aragats, 2,300 meters above sea level. With the exception of the occasional shepherd and beekeeper, the road leading up to the fortress is virtually uninhabited. Wild flowers and great views occupy its gently sloping hills. Because of the program, many of these artists were able to see this historic structure for the first time, take in its beauty and create great works of art, an opportunity they ordinarily wouldn’t have. They truly believe this program plays an important role in the life of Yerevan’s fine artists.

This time Tigran Barkhanajyan’s “Amberd” canvas was kindly donated to FAR’s art collection.

[FAR Fine Art Painter’s Program]: Artists Enjoy Spring’s “Open Air.”

Spring is at its peak in Armenia. Every day nature fills people’s hearts with hope, joy and color. Artists feel those colors strongly and they need to be close to nature, an opportunity that FAR’s Fine Art Painter’s Program provides.

For more than ten years, FAR has organized daylong excursions for local artists. This particular trip, which was called “Plain Air” or “Open Air,” differed from previous ones in that most of its participants were women. Artyusha Avetyan, a representative of the Artists’ Union of Armenia, selected a group, which included experienced artists and students from the Yerevan Academy of Fine Arts.

All of them spent one unforgettable day in the neighborhood of Ashtarak, near a 17th century bridge, painting beautiful pictures. Susanna Tovmasyan, who has been painting for 30 years, expressed her sincere gratitude to FAR for creating such an opportunity. Nina Karapetyan, who recently opened her first solo exhibition at the Armenian Artists’ House, was fascinated by the well-organized event. She called her painting A Scene with Surb Sargis (Saint Sargis) and generously donated it to FAR’s office.

FAR Communications Officer Hasmik Manukyan accompanied the group. The day was significant for her as it was the first time she had ever used oil paints to bring a lovely landscape to life on canvas.

[FAR Fine Art Painter's Program]: Artists Find Inspiration in Winter Scenery.

Winter came to Armenia late this year. Now, it is making its slow and reluctant departure. In a way, this was a blessing for the members of FAR’s Fine Arts Painter’s Program, who were able to travel to the Kotayk region and soak up the winter view in Hankavan.

Their surroundings covered with snow and showered in bright sun, six artists and two art critics spent one unforgettable day on the bank of Marmarik River putting on canvas their interpretations of the view. FAR usually holds the trip three times a year and each time one artist thanks FAR with the gift of a painting.

For 10 years, FAR has worked with the Artists Union of Armenia to organize these excursions. The program covers transportation costs and provides food and supplies for the day trips, which are a welcome respite from Yerevan and a chance for these artists to immerse themselves in and be inspired by nature.

So far, the artist groups initiated by FAR have only painted during spring, summer and fall. This was the first time they were able to capture the unique spirit of winter. Artist Hamlet Asatryan generously presented his painting, which he named “Late Winter,” to FAR as a token of appreciation.

[FAR Fine Art Painter's Program]: Meeting with Autumn Colors.

Each year, FAR partners with the Armenian Artists’ Union to organize an excursion to a serene and scenic spot outside Yerevan with the hope that these selected painters have the chance to absorb a new environment and gain inspiration for their work. FAR provides the coverage for travel, food and art supplies needed for the trip. This fall’s group recently spent a day at Karbi Gorge in Aragatsotn region.

The richness of the Armenian fall was at its peak, the sky clear, the sun warm. Together these eight painters passed the day capturing the scene and engaging in lively conversation anytime they put their brushes down. Despite the fact that they all live in Yerevan, they often don’t have an opportunity to form camaraderie; this trip makes it possible.

And as tradition goes, one of these artists will donate a painting to enrich the already impressive collection of work from these bi-annual trips.

[FAR Fine Art Painter’s Program]: A Chance to Commune with Nature.

Several Armenian artists recently returned from a trip to Lake Sevan where they were able to focus on their work thanks to the FAR Fine Art Painter’s Program. For 10 years, FAR has worked with the Artists Union of Armenia to organize these excursions. The program covers transportation costs and provides food and supplies for the day trips, which are a welcome respite from Yerevan and a chance for these artists to immerse themselves in and be inspired by nature.

The program is incredibly important, as it helps to educate Armenian artists on the richness and treasures of their country, and gain a new perspective through which they can express themselves, according to FAR’s Press Secretary Levon Lachikyan.

FAR usually holds the trip three times a year and each artist thanked FAR with the gift of a painting.

[FAR Fine Art Painter's Program]: Helping Armenian Artists Find Inspiration in Nature

  • January 8, 2010 2:23 pm

In order to support the robust arts community in Armenia, FAR and the Armenian Artists’ Union are providing artists with a unique opportunity to explore nature and find inspiration for their work. During soviet times, artists were sponsored to travel within Armenia as well as internationally in order to find inspiration. Additionally, the state often purchased the art works of the members of Armenian Artists Union. However today, many Armenian artists cannot afford to travel outside of Yerevan. FAR’s joint program with the Armenian Artists’ Union aims to fill the gap by sponsoring artists to visit the more remote regions of Armenia three times a year. For the trips, the groups are provided with transportation, food and art supplies.

Hrach Aloyan, one of the artists participating in the program, shared his impressions with us. “Though I was involved in this Program of FAR in later autumn, when the weather was cold, my heart was warmed thanks to the atmosphere created. For a long time, I have not been able to make a creative journey with my friends. I would like to thank FAR for providing such an opportunity.” As a token of thankfulness, Hrach presented FAR with his painting titled “Ashun” (Autumn). Like Hrach, many Armenian artists dream of new opportunities to visit Karabagh and Javakhk in order to capture the colors of those Armenian lands. FAR hopes to continue to support these artists in their creative endeavors.
